XRP (XRP) Tokenomie

The XRP Ledger (XRPL) is a decentralized, blockchain-based protocol designed primarily for fast, energy-efficient cross-border payments and institutional settlement. Its native token, XRP, serves as the primary utility and liquidity asset within this ecosystem.

Issuance Mechanism

XRP was created with a fixed total supply of 100 billion tokens, all of which were pre-mined at the ledger's inception in 2012. Unlike Proof-of-Work (PoW) or Proof-of-Stake (PoS) networks, no new XRP can be created through mining or staking.

The supply is subject to two primary forces:

• Inflationary Pressure: Driven by the programmatic release of XRP from Ripple’s escrow accounts and the distribution of tokens held by the founders.
• Deflationary Pressure: Every transaction on the XRPL requires a small fee (typically 10 "drops," where 1 drop is 0.000001 XRP) that is permanently burned (destroyed). Since inception, over 10 million XRP have been burned.

Allocation Mechanism

The initial 100 billion XRP were distributed as follows:

• Ripple Labs: Received 80 billion XRP (80% of the total supply) to support the development of the ecosystem, strengthen markets, and improve network liquidity.
• Founding Team: Received 20 billion XRP (20% of the total supply). This was further divided among the three founders:
  • Chris Larsen: 9.5 billion XRP (47.5% of the founders' share).
  • Arthur Britto: 9.5 billion XRP (47.5% of the founders' share).
  • Jed McCaleb: 1 billion XRP (5% of the founders' share).

Usage and Incentive Mechanism

XRP serves several critical functions within the XRPL ecosystem:

• Bridge Currency: In Ripple’s On-Demand Liquidity (ODL) service, XRP acts as an intermediary to facilitate instant liquidity between different fiat currencies, reducing the need for pre-funded nostro accounts.
• Transaction Fees: All gas fees on the network are paid in XRP and subsequently burned.
• Account Reserves: To prevent spam and Sybil attacks, the XRPL requires a base reserve of 10 XRP to create a wallet and an additional 2 XRP for each "Trust Line" or object (such as an NFT or Issued Currency) owned by the account.
• DEX and AMM: XRP is used as a medium of exchange in the native Central Limit Order Book (CLOB) and Automated Market Maker (AMM). The AMM includes a mechanism where liquidity providers can bid LP tokens for an "auction slot" to receive trading fee discounts.

Notably, the XRPL uses a Proof-of-Association (PoA) consensus mechanism. Unlike other chains, validators do not receive financial rewards or transaction fees; their primary incentive is to support the decentralization and health of the network.

Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time

To ensure a predictable supply and prevent market flooding, Ripple implemented a formal escrow system in 2017.

As of early 2024, approximately 40.51 billion XRP remained in escrow, while approximately 59.48 billion XRP were in circulation. This monthly release cycle will continue until the remaining escrowed supply becomes liquid.
