PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the Registrar of Societies had taken note of the Supreme Council’s approval of Muhyiddin Yassin’s resignation as the coalition chairman and the appointment of Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar to the post.
PETALING JAYA: A Perikatan Nasional leader said no function or meeting can be organised under the coalition’s name without the approval of its chairman, Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar.
PN secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the Registrar of Societies had acknowledged the change in the coalition’s leadership.
In February, Samsuri was appointed the PN chairman, succeeding Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin, who resigned on Jan 1 following the Perlis political crisis.
Takiyuddin said the RoS, in a letter dated June 19 and addressed to him, confirmed receipt of the minutes of the coalition’s extraordinary Supreme Council meeting on Feb 22.
The RoS also took note of the Supreme Council’s approval of Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman and the appointment of Samsuri to the post.
It also confirmed receipt of the minutes of PN’s first Supreme Council meeting held on March 14, together with the coalition’s updated leadership lineup and appointments to its Supreme Council committee.
“Therefore, no function or meeting under the Perikatan Nasional banner can be carried out without Samsuri’s permission,” Takiyuddin said in a statement.
He was responding to reports that Muhyiddin had moved to convene a PN Supreme Council meeting at the Bersatu headquarters today, amid the ongoing spat between Bersatu and PAS.
Bersatu secretary-general Azmin Ali has since rubbished the report, telling Malaysia Gazette that it was fake news.
The relationship between the two parties have been strained for months and on June 8, PAS decided to sever its ties with Bersatu, on grounds that Muhyiddin’s party had become power-hungry and was no longer prioritising Malay-Muslim unity.
Bersatu has since pledged to go all-out against PAS in the upcoming Johor and Negeri Sembilan state elections, while insisting that it will contest under the PN banner.
On Wednesday, Samsuri relieved PN’s deputy secretary-general, Azmin Ali, and election director, Radzi Jidin, both from Bersatu, of their duties.
