As reported by Daily Mail, defense attorneys for the man accused of killing Charlie Kirk, filed a court claim on Friday indicating Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives or ATF was unable to match the bullet recovered from Kirk's autopsy to the rifle allegedly tied to the murder.
The filing sparked online speculation and fueled existing conspiracy theories surrounding the assassination.
Liberal commentators Joanne Carducci and "The Maine Wonk" expressed confusion on social media.
More notably, right-wing influencer Candace Owens has promoted unsubstantiated theories that Israel played a role in Kirk's death in September at Utah University, prompting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to issue a refutation.
Former Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene suggested the ballistics revelation may have prompted Washington County Sheriff Nate Brooksby to resign Monday after three decades in law enforcement, tweeting: "The ATF could not match the bullet to Tyler Robinson's gun and when the news breaks the sheriff resigns."
