A crypto-focused political action committee plans to spend $1.5 million to defeat Texas Representative Al Green in next month’s Democratic primary election. Protect Progress, which is affiliated with the major crypto super PAC Fairshake, announced the campaign spending on Thursday.
Green has represented Texas’s 9th congressional district since 2005 and serves on the House Financial Services Committee. He voted against two crypto bills that passed the House in 2024: the GENIUS Act for stablecoin regulation and the CLARITY Act.
The crypto advocacy group Stand With Crypto rates Green as “strongly against crypto” based on his voting record and public statements. Green has raised concerns about risks cryptocurrencies pose to the financial system and investors.
Green faces Christian Menefee in the March 3 Democratic primary for the newly redrawn Houston-area district. Menefee just won a special election and took office days ago.
Stand With Crypto gives Menefee an “A” grade and rates him as “strongly supports crypto.” Menefee answered a questionnaire from the organization expressing interest in blockchain applications for government services.
Menefee specifically mentioned using blockchain technology to combat deed fraud by recording property records on the blockchain. He said this innovation could protect families from scams and modernize government systems.
The $1.5 million in spending against Green exceeds his typical campaign costs. In 2024, Green’s campaign spent less than $450,000 to keep his seat in an unchallenged primary.
Green has raised more than $700,000 for this election cycle. However, that amount is less than half of what Fairshake’s affiliate plans to spend opposing him.
Fairshake emerged as a major political spender in 2024, deploying roughly $130 million in that election cycle. The spending helped elect multiple pro-crypto candidates to Congress.
The super PAC has amassed $193 million for the 2026 midterm elections. Fairshake announced in January that it would use this money to support crypto-friendly candidates across the country.
Super PACs raise money through donations but cannot directly fund or coordinate with political campaigns. They instead purchase advertisements and use other methods to support or oppose candidates.
Earlier this week, another Fairshake affiliate called Defend American Jobs announced $5 million in spending to support Republican Barry Moore in Alabama’s Senate primary. Fairshake is also backing House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill.
Texas holds one of the earliest primary elections on March 3, along with Arkansas and North Carolina. The Democratic primary winner will face the general election on November 3.
Green co-sponsored legislation seeking to ban President Trump from his personal crypto business interests. This position further solidified his opposition to the crypto industry in the eyes of advocacy groups.
Protect Progress said Texas voters cannot accept representation that is “actively hostile” to the state’s growing crypto community. The group stated it wants to elect members who embrace innovation and wealth creation for Americans.
