7 reasons to watch ‘I’mPerfect’

MANILA, Philippines – As a mother of a teenager with Down syndrome, I have longed for my daughter to see representation that is not stereotyped or based on some caricature of a person with a disability. Many times, we have to look for international films or series like The Peanut Butter Falcon, Where Hope Grows, and Born This Way.

Never before has Philippine cinema offered a film that shares authentic stories and lived experiences —allowing mainstream audiences to truly understand just how capable individuals with Down syndrome are — until now.

As an advocate and executive director of Best Buddies Philippines, I approach endorsements of any kind with great care — whether for a program, product, project, or film. I take seriously the responsibility of discerning what is genuinely empowering for our community, especially knowing how easily efforts can cross into exploitation or tokenism.

Here in support of the community are representatives of The Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines Inc (DSAPI), Independent Living Learning Centre (ILLC) Special Olympics Pilipinas (SOP) Best Buddies Philippines (BBP) ALRES Philippines, and Nathan Studios.

In 2024, Nathan Studios, together with producer Sylvia Sanchez and director Sigrid Bernardo, invited Best Buddies Philippines, alongside fellow organizations, advocates, and parents, to a dialogue that would help shape the film from the very beginning.

They were transparent about their desire to learn, listen, and serve the community well. Along with Special Olympics Pilipinas and the Down Syndrome Association of the Philippines, Best Buddies Philippines committed to supporting the film as it set its sights on the 2025 Metro Manila Film Festival.

When the film was selected as one of the eight official entries to the 51st Metro Manila Film Festival, we knew this moment was a game changer.

Beyond being featured in the country’s most widely watched film festival, I am proud — as a mother and an advocate — to share my top seven reasons why I’mPerfect is a film you should watch.

It’s honest. This film beautifully captures the real struggles and the quiet victories of families who love someone with Down syndrome — without sugarcoating and without pity. The preview of experiences and stories through Jiro and Jessica’s families becomes an open invitation for everyone to learn about disabilities in the simplest of ways.

It challenges stereotypes. I’mPerfect shows the capabilities of people with Down syndrome in a way that is respectful and empowering — never infantilizing, always human.

It reminds us that language matters. The film calls out outdated and hurtful terms and shows how discrimination — often subtle, sometimes blatant — continues to limit full participation in society for individuals with Down syndrome.

It is a film that is endorsed both by DepEd and the NCDA. Receiving an endorsement from both the Department of Education and National Council of Disability Affairs gives credibility to an already impactful film, with a seal of approval encouraging inclusive conversations and work nationwide.

At its heart, it’s a love story. One that takes you on an emotional ride and reminds us how much we still have to learn about acceptance, autonomy, and what it truly means to belong.

It’s an authentic representation. This is a story about people with Down syndrome, portrayed by actors who themselves have Down syndrome, making the storytelling powerful, credible, and deeply moving.

It shows that individuals with Down syndrome CAN. All throughout the film and during the promotion period of the Metro Manila Film Festival, these young adults were empowered to work, find their voices, and step into the spotlight. They shared their talents and poured themselves into the film and gave everyone a reason to hope for love, aspire for equitable opportunities, and embrace the perfect imperfections of this thing called life. – Rappler.com
