Gilas Pilipinas turns back host Thailand to defend SEA Games throne

BANGKOK, Thailand – Not even the hosts’ flip-flopping on players’ eligibility rules could deny Gilas Pilipinas’ title defense.

The Philippines retained its men’s 5-on-5 basketball crown in the Southeast Asian Games after an inspired 70-64 comeback win over Thailand at the jampacked Nimibutr Arena here on Friday, December 19.

Jamie Malonzo, Robert Bolick, and Thirdy Ravena hit big shots as the Nationals recovered from a slow start that saw them fall behind by double digits to capture a 20th SEA Games gold medal in the event.

It was vindication for the Filipinos after the team scrambled to put together a winning roster after local organizers barred the inclusion of those classified as naturalized players, which they had earlier approved.

The rule change prevented the entry of the likes of Justin Brownlee, Remy Martin, Ange Kouame, Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser, and Kymani Ladi.

But this group coached by Norman Black proved it can also get the job done, stunning a Thai side that reached the final with ease after winning all of its four previous games by a whopping margin of 44.3 points.

Thailand still led 55-54 with under eight minutes left after big man Poy Erram fouled out, but Gilas Pilipinas unleashed a 12-0 run highlighted by back-to-back Malonzo and Matthew Wright three-pointers.

Missed free throws then doomed the Thais, who failed to get any closer after cutting their deficit to 64-68 with under a minute left as Freddie Lish bungled both of his foul shots.

Bolick then sealed the win with a pair of free throws.

The Philippines swept the 5-on-5 basketball gold medals for the first time since 2019 as Gilas Women reclaimed the crown by also beating Thailand. – Rappler.com

Edges higher ahead of BoC-Fed policy outcome

The post Edges higher ahead of BoC-Fed policy outcome appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. USD/CAD gains marginally to near 1.3760 ahead of monetary policy announcements by the Fed and the BoC. Both the Fed and the BoC are expected to lower interest rates. USD/CAD forms a Head and Shoulder chart pattern. The USD/CAD pair ticks up to near 1.3760 during the late European session on Wednesday. The Loonie pair gains marginally ahead of monetary policy outcomes by the Bank of Canada (BoC) and the Federal Reserve (Fed) during New York trading hours. Both the BoC and the Fed are expected to cut interest rates amid mounting labor market conditions in their respective economies. Inflationary pressures in the Canadian economy have cooled down, emerging as another reason behind the BoC’s dovish expectations. However, the Fed is expected to start the monetary-easing campaign despite the United States (US) inflation remaining higher. Investors will closely monitor press conferences from both Fed Chair Jerome Powell and BoC Governor Tiff Macklem to get cues about whether there will be more interest rate cuts in the remainder of the year. According to analysts from Barclays, the Fed’s latest median projections for interest rates are likely to call for three interest rate cuts by 2025. Ahead of the Fed’s monetary policy, the US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the Greenback’s value against six major currencies, holds onto Tuesday’s losses near 96.60. USD/CAD forms a Head and Shoulder chart pattern, which indicates a bearish reversal. The neckline of the above-mentioned chart pattern is plotted near 1.3715. The near-term trend of the pair remains bearish as it stays below the 20-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), which trades around 1.3800. The 14-day Relative Strength Index (RSI) slides to near 40.00. A fresh bearish momentum would emerge if the RSI falls below that level. Going forward, the asset could slide towards the round level of…
