PLDT INC., through its wireless unit Smart Communications, Inc., has completed a live demonstration with technology partner Nokia Corp. aimed at improving outbound data roaming services for its subscribers.
In a statement on Wednesday, Smart said the trial demonstrated how roaming traffic from subscribers traveling in Europe could be routed locally using Nokia’s technology.
The telecommunications company said the demonstration used Nokia’s Core Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Edge for Roaming solution, which is designed to enable operators to provide local-quality roaming services.
The companies said the trial utilized a process known as local breakout, which routes mobile data traffic through a local network rather than the subscriber’s home network. Smart said the technology resulted in lower latency, faster browsing, and improved application responsiveness.
“Smart’s continuous investments in exploring innovations such as this local breakout technology is part of our broader commitment to always deliver exceptional services to our customers, wherever they may be — not just in the Philippines, but across the world,” PLDT Chief Operating Officer and Head of Network Menardo G. Jimenez, Jr. said.
“Solutions like Core SaaS Edge are advancing connectivity by unlocking better roaming experiences for people worldwide. Working with telecommunication service providers like Smart — innovators that are willing to push the boundaries of tomorrow — helps us take important steps to a brighter future,” Nokia Vice-President for Asia Pacific Henrique Vale said.
On Wednesday, shares of PLDT rose 1.21%, or P14, to close at P1,175 each.
