PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested four more people to aid investigations into the alleged sale of forged medical certificates in Pekan, Pahang.

State police chief Yahaya Othman said the four suspects, all in their 40s and believed to be buyers, were arrested in the district on Wednesday, with their statements to be recorded as part of the investigation.

“Meanwhile, the five suspects arrested on Monday were released on police bail today after their remand period ended,” Sinar Harian reported him as saying in Pekan today.

Yahaya said the case is being investigated under Section 468 of the Penal Code for forgery and Section 420 for cheating.

The case first came to light after the Pekan health office was informed on May 12 that medical certificates were allegedly being sold to workers at a factory in the district.

Pekan police chief Zaidi Mat Zin said the district health office received information from a person who claimed to have bought a medical certificate from a man believed to have obtained it from a government clinic for a fee.

He said the certificates were sold for between RM50 and RM200 each. The medical officer whose name appeared on the certificates confirmed that he had been transferred to another workplace in 2023 and that the stamp used was outdated and no longer in use.

Zaidi said the sale of the certificates appeared to be organised, with middlemen tasked with sourcing customers and managing sales.

Police subsequently arrested five suspects in Pekan, comprising three alleged middlemen, a nurse at a government clinic believed to have supplied the certificates, and a suspected buyer.
