In November 2024, the High Court ruled that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin defamed DAP’s Lim Guan Eng by claiming that instructions to cancel Yayasan Albukhary’s tax-exempt status came from Lim when he was finance minister.
PUTRAJAYA: The Court of Appeal has upheld the High Court’s ruling that Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin defamed former finance minister Lim Guan Eng in relation to Yayasan Al-Bukhary’s tax-exempt status.
However, a three-member bench chaired by Justice Azhahari Kamal Ramli allowed the former prime minister’s appeal against the quantum of damages, reducing the general damages payable to RM450,000.
Azhahari, who sat with Justices Ahmad Kamal Shahid and Latifah Tahar, also set aside awards of RM150,000 each in aggravated and exemplary damages.
On Nov 8, 2024, the High Court awarded a total of RM1.35 million in damages to Lim, the DAP adviser.
