Summary

SLV and SLVON both provide silver-related market exposure, but they are different financial products with different ownership structures, trading systems and risks.

SLV is the ticker for the iShares Silver Trust, an exchange-traded grantor trust listed on NYSE Arca. The Trust primarily holds physical silver and seeks to reflect silver-price performance before paying its expenses and liabilities.

SLVON is an Ondo tokenized product designed to provide economic exposure linked to SLV. Eligible users can trade SLVON/USDT on MEXC, but purchasing SLVON does not provide direct ownership of an SLV share or physical silver.

The choice between SLV and SLVON depends on the investor’s jurisdiction, account type, preferred trading currency, custody requirements and understanding of tokenized securities.

What Is SLV?

SLV is the ticker for the iShares Silver Trust.

The Trust was organized in 2006 and issues shares representing fractional beneficial interests in its net assets. Its principal assets consist of silver bullion held through its custody structure. The Trust seeks to reflect generally the performance of the price of silver before payment of its expenses and liabilities.

SLV is listed on NYSE Arca and can normally be purchased through a securities brokerage account.

The official iShares SLV page identifies:

  • NYSE Arca as the exchange;

  • The LBMA Silver Price as the reference benchmark;

  • A sponsor fee of 0.50%;

  • No regular distribution frequency;

  • Physical silver holdings reported by the Trust.

SLV is not an actively managed fund. It does not attempt to profit from short-term silver-price movements or protect shareholders from falling prices. Silver may be sold to pay the sponsor fee and other applicable liabilities, gradually reducing the amount of silver represented by each share.

What Is SLVON?

SLVON, styled by Ondo as SLVon, is a tokenized product linked to SLV.

Ondo’s product directory identifies it as SLVon: iShares Silver Trust (Ondo Tokenized). The token is issued through the Ondo Stocks structure rather than by the iShares Silver Trust, BlackRock, NYSE Arca or MEXC.

Ondo describes its tokenized products as tokens designed to provide the economic exposure investors would receive from the corresponding publicly traded security, including reinvested distributions after applicable withholding taxes.

However, Ondo also states that its tokens:

  • Are not themselves stocks or ETFs;

  • Do not provide a general right to hold the underlying security;

  • Do not provide a general right to receive the underlying security.

For a detailed explanation, read What Is SLVON? Ondo Tokenized iShares Silver Trust Explained.

The Main Difference: What Does the Investor Own?

Ownership is the most important distinction between SLV and SLVON.

When an investor buys SLV through a securities broker, the investor owns shares representing beneficial interests in the iShares Silver Trust.

When a user buys SLVON, the user owns an Ondo tokenized product linked to SLV’s economic performance.

Ownership questionSLV holderSLVON holder
Owns SLV sharesYesNo
Owns physical silver directlyNoNo
Has silver-related economic exposureYesYes, through SLV
Holds a blockchain tokenNoYes
Can demand an SLV share from OndoNot applicableNo general right
Can redeem an individual holding for silverGenerally noNo

SLVON should therefore not be described as an SLV share stored on a blockchain. It is a separate tokenized security product.

Is SLV the Same as Physical Silver?

No.

The iShares Silver Trust holds silver, but ordinary SLV investors own trust shares rather than specific bars held in their own names.

Individual retail shareholders generally cannot redeem a small number of SLV shares for physical bullion. Creation and redemption are handled by Authorized Participants using large blocks called Baskets.

Current Trust documents describe each Basket as containing 50,000 SLV shares. Baskets are created or redeemed in exchange for the applicable quantity of silver.

The ownership chain is therefore:

SLV investor

→ owns SLV shares

→ representing an interest in the Trust

→ whose principal asset is silver.

The SLVON chain adds another layer:

SLVON investor

→ owns an Ondo token

→ linked to SLV

→ which represents an interest in a Trust

→ whose principal asset is silver.

How Do SLV and SLVON Track Silver?

SLV seeks to reflect silver-bullion performance before expenses and liabilities.

SLVON is designed to track the economic performance associated with SLV.

This creates two tracking layers:

Tracking layerPossible price difference
Silver to SLVSLV market price may differ from its silver-backed net asset value
SLV to SLVONSLVON market price may differ from its SLV-related reference value

The simplified price chain is:

Global silver prices

Value of silver held by the Trust

SLV net asset value

SLV market price

SLVON reference value

SLVON/USDT market price

A price movement can therefore originate from the silver market or from conditions specific to SLVON trading.

Why Can SLVON and SLV Have Different Prices?

SLV and SLVON trade in separate markets.

SLV’s market price is determined through traditional securities trading. SLVON/USDT is determined by buyers and sellers in the MEXC order book. MEXC’s live page identifies the listed pair as SLVON/USDT and the product name as iShares Silver Trust.

Temporary price differences may result from:

  • Different market participants;

  • Different trading hours;

  • MEXC order-book liquidity;

  • Bid-ask spreads;

  • USDT/USD movements;

  • SLV trading above or below net asset value;

  • Minting and redemption interruptions;

  • Silver-price movements while NYSE Arca is closed.

A difference between SLVON and SLV does not automatically mean the token is incorrectly structured. Traders should examine the timing, liquidity and size of the difference.

Trading Hours

SLV follows the trading schedule of NYSE Arca, although some securities brokers may also offer pre-market and after-hours trading.

Ondo states that direct minting and redemption of its tokenized securities are generally available 24 hours a day, five days a week. Tokens may be transferred or traded at other times on supported platforms, subject to jurisdictional and operational restrictions.

This can allow SLVON to react to silver-market developments while SLV’s primary exchange is closed.

However, outside traditional U.S. market hours:

  • SLV’s latest price may be stale;

  • SLVON spreads may widen;

  • Order-book depth may decline;

  • Premiums and discounts may become larger.

Longer trading availability does not guarantee deeper liquidity.

Trading Currency and Account Type

SLV is normally purchased with U.S. dollars through a securities broker.

Eligible users can trade SLVON/USDT on MEXC using USDT.

SLVON may be more convenient for users who already hold USDT, but it adds stablecoin and exchange-custody risks.

Fees and Long-Term Tracking

SLV currently charges a sponsor fee of 0.50% of net asset value. The fee accrues daily, and the Trust may sell silver to meet its expenses. This means the amount of silver represented by each SLV share generally decreases over time.

SLVON holders are indirectly exposed to this effect because SLVON tracks SLV rather than raw silver prices.

SLVON users may also face:

  • MEXC trading fees;

  • Bid-ask spreads;

  • Slippage;

  • USDT conversion costs;

  • Blockchain fees when transfers are supported;

  • Ondo minting or redemption costs for eligible direct participants.

The tokenization layer does not remove the expenses already present within SLV.

Backing and Custody

SLV’s principal asset is physical silver held by its custodian on behalf of the Trust. The Trust’s trustee is responsible for administration, while its sponsor oversees the product structure.

Ondo states that its tokenized securities are fully backed by the corresponding publicly traded securities and cash held through U.S.-registered custodial broker-dealers. It also describes daily backing verification, a security agent and a security interest in the collateral.

The custody chains are therefore different:

  • SLV depends on the Trust’s silver-custody arrangements;

  • SLVON depends on the SLV layer plus Ondo’s issuer, broker-dealer and token infrastructure;

  • SLVON held on MEXC also depends on MEXC’s exchange-custody system.
