MEXC is our pick here for traders outside the US, UK and EEA: more than 800 MEXC markets cost 0.0000%, against Uphold's 2.55% altcoin spread.
Before you compare anything else, check whether Uphold will still open an account where you live, because it stopped accepting new ones in more than a hundred locations.

Key Takeaways
  • Uphold's rate card dated 1 July 2026 charges 2.55% to 3.10% on altcoins, so a 1,000 USD round trip costs 51.00 USD at the low end.
  • The same round trip costs 1.00 USD on a standard MEXC pair and nothing at all on a market carrying MEXC's 0 Fees tag.
  • The 0 Fees filter on MEXC's official fee page returns more than 380 spot pairs and more than 420 USDT-M perpetuals at 0.0000% on both sides.
  • Uphold stopped accepting new accounts in around 100 locations including Mexico, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines and Nigeria, none of which appears in MEXC's Prohibited Jurisdictions clause.
  • Uphold wins outright on precious metals, 27 national currencies and the real US equities service it launched in July 2026.
  • MEXC does not serve the US, the UK, Canada, Malaysia or the EEA, so for readers there this article is background rather than a recommendation.

The cost is in the exchange rate, not on the receipt

Uphold does not charge a commission line.
It quotes one all-in price, you accept it, and the trade completes in a single tap.
That design is why people like the platform, and it is also why the cost is easy to miss.
The price is shown before you confirm, so nothing is concealed.
The cost simply arrives as a worse exchange rate rather than as a separate line you can compare against another venue.
Uphold publishes the number, and on its rate card dated 1 July 2026 that number is 2.55% to 3.10% on altcoins.
Buying 1,000 USD of a mid-cap token costs 25.50 USD at the low end of that band before the price has moved at all, and selling it later costs the same again.

The MEXC View

This article is published by MEXC and it recommends MEXC, so the method behind that recommendation should be visible rather than assumed.
We compared platforms on published rates only, and where a platform declines to publish a number we said so instead of estimating one.
Our approach is set out in full in our review methodology.
One caveat belongs here rather than in a footnote, because it works against us.
MEXC's posted rate is what MEXC charges, but the total cost of an order-book trade also includes bid-ask spread and slippage that nobody can publish in advance, while Uphold's all-in quote already contains that component.
We think the gap survives that adjustment comfortably at retail size, because closing a 2.50 percentage point difference would need slippage on a liquid pair that does not occur at ordinary order sizes.
We would rather state it than let a reader discover it later.

Where MEXC wins

More than 800 markets cost nothing on either side

The official MEXC fee page carries a 0 Fees filter on both its spot and futures tabs, and it is a published category rather than a marketing line.
Filtering the spot tab returns 39 pages of pairs at ten rows a page, and filtering the USDT-M futures tab returns 43 pages.
That is more than 380 spot pairs and more than 420 USDT-M perpetual contracts priced at 0.0000% maker and 0.0000% taker.
We counted pages rather than individual rows, so treat both figures as floors, and note that the futures count excludes coin-M contracts because the filter was set to USDT-M.
The list covers assets an Uphold user would recognise.
On spot it includes XRP, USDC and EUR pairs alongside tokenised equity pairs such as TSLAX, NVDAX and CRCLX.
On perpetuals it includes XRP, SOL and SUI, silver contracts, and tokenised stock perpetuals including TSLA, NVDA and SPCX.
Against a quoted spread of 2.55%, a rate of zero is not a discount to argue about.

The same trade, in money

An Uphold user buying and selling 1,000 USD of an altcoin pays 51.00 USD at the low end of the published band.
The same round trip on a standard MEXC pair costs 1.00 USD at the posted 0.0500% taker rate.
On a market carrying the 0 Fees tag it costs nothing.
Scale that to a trader turning over 500,000 USD of altcoins across a year, roughly 42,000 USD a month.
At Uphold's published 2.55% that costs 12,750.00 USD.
At MEXC's posted 0.0500% it costs 250.00 USD, falling to 200.00 USD with the MX deduction applied, and to nothing on the 0 Fees list.
Three further Uphold charges sit outside the rate card and are rarely mentioned anywhere.
A 0.99 USD fee applies to trades worth less than 500 USD, with stablecoin trades and card transactions among the listed exceptions.
Crypto withdrawals carry a flat 0.99 USD on every network except BTC, XRP and HBAR, on top of the network fee.
Staking commission runs 20% to 25% on boosted staking and 50% on flexible staking.
Uphold also states that when you trade between two asset types, the higher of the two rates applies, so converting an altcoin into a stablecoin is charged at the altcoin rate.

Breadth, and a product line Uphold does not have at all

CoinGecko tracked 1,627 coins and 2,019 pairs on MEXC on 4 September 2026, alongside 1,214 perpetual contracts.
Uphold does not publish a single asset count that third parties agree on, and figures quoted in major reviews range from roughly 250 to 360.
Whichever figure is right, the order of magnitude is settled.
Uphold offers no futures at all, so a trader who wants to hedge a spot position or take a short has no route to do it inside the account.
MEXC adds Earn products, copy trading, Launchpad and Launchpool around the order book.

Uphold may not open an account for you, and MEXC will

This is the win that decides the comparison for a large share of readers, and it is not about price at all.
Uphold's help centre, updated 22 July 2026, stopped new account creation across a list that includes Mexico, Bolivia, Ecuador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Jamaica, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, Ghana and Morocco.
None of those markets appears in the Prohibited Jurisdictions clause of the MEXC User Agreement.
If you are reading this from Mexico City, Lagos, Jakarta or Ho Chi Minh City, the question is not which platform is cheaper.
It is which platform will take your registration, and on the two platforms in this comparison the answer is MEXC.

Spread vs Posted Fee: What Each Price Contains

An all-in quote and a posted rate are not directly comparable, and the honest way to handle that is to name the components rather than net them out.
Uphold's spread contains its revenue on the trade, the bid-ask spread and any slippage on size, all rolled into one number you see before confirming.
MEXC's posted rate contains only its revenue, with spread and slippage paid on top and varying by pair and order size.
That is why we have not produced a single blended number for MEXC.
Any figure we invented for slippage would be an estimate dressed as a measurement, and the comparison does not need it.
Uphold also deserves credit on one point that its competitors mostly fail.
It publishes a numeric rate card, and several platforms built on the same quote-and-accept model do not publish theirs at all.
The problem with Uphold is not that the cost is hidden, it is the size of it once the percentage is converted into money.
Our fuller breakdown of how platforms structure trading costs is in our crypto exchange fee comparison.

Uphold Restricted Countries: Two Tiers

Uphold's restrictions come in two tiers.
The first receives no service at all, and it runs to 33 locations including Canada, New York State, Russia, Lebanon, Cambodia and Fiji.
The second blocks new account creation while leaving existing customers with limited access, and it covers every EU and EEA state alongside the emerging markets listed earlier.
Uphold adds that existing customers in any listed location may find their access limited and may be asked to close the account.

A note for UK readers

Uphold does still accept UK customers, and the UK is one of its core markets.
What the disclosure at the foot of its own fee page says is worth reading before assuming that means regulated protection.
Its cryptoasset services are unregulated and are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme or the FCA's consumer protection rules.
That is a normal structure for a UK crypto firm rather than a red flag, but the protections most people assume apply to a regulated financial account do not apply here.
The United Kingdom is a Prohibited Jurisdiction under the MEXC User Agreement, so MEXC is not the answer for UK readers either.

Where MEXC cannot help you

MEXC does not serve residents of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Malaysia or Kazakhstan.
MEXC is not registered with Japan's Financial Services Agency, and readers in Japan should treat it accordingly.
Our restricted regions guide summarises the position, and the User Agreement is the authority.

Where Uphold wins outright

Four things about Uphold are hard to replace, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
The multi-asset account itself.
Gold, silver, platinum and palladium sit alongside crypto and fiat in one balance, and the anything-to-anything model converts between them in one step without a stablecoin leg in the middle.
Real US equities, executed by a broker-dealer.
Since July 2026 US customers can hold more than 4,000 US stocks and ETFs in the same account, with fractional positions from 5 USD.
Equities are executed by Uphold Securities, a registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA and SIPC, and a crypto-funded purchase converts to dollars before the stock order is placed.
MEXC has nothing equivalent, and the distinction matters more than the marketing suggests.
RealStocks on MEXC gives price exposure to a listed equity through a tokenised instrument.
Anyone comparing the two on the basis that both give exposure to a US ticker is comparing different things.
The fiat surface area.
Uphold supports 27 national currencies as tradable ledger balances, which is more than any order-book exchange in this comparison offers.
For someone whose income sits in a currency most crypto exchanges ignore, that is not a small feature.
Reserve transparency.
Uphold publishes assets and liabilities in near real time through Reserveledger and Reservechain, and holds SOC 2 Type 2, ISO 27001 and PCI DSS certifications.
Real-time public reserve reporting remains rare, and MEXC's monthly attestation is a slower cadence than that.

Two 2026 events worth knowing about

The matter concerned Uphold's promotion of CredEarn, a yield product operated by the third-party firm Cred LLC, between January 2019 and October 2020.
Under the Assurance of Discontinuance, Uphold agreed to pay harmed investors, improve its third-party due diligence and register as a broker with the office.
Uphold responded the following day, rejecting the characterisation of its conduct, noting that the settlement contains no admission of liability, and stating that the US Department of Justice identified Uphold as a victim in its criminal case against Cred executives.
Separately, Uphold's European business runs through a Portuguese entity, and a notice on its EEA user agreement states that its regulator has told it the MiCAR application remains under active review.
The same notice says temporary service restrictions were introduced when the MiCA transition period ended on 1 July 2026, that assets remain secure, and that customers can withdraw at any time.
Authorisation status changes, and ESMA's register is where to check it rather than any third-party article, including this one.

Risk and compliance disclosure

Trading cryptocurrency carries substantial risk and you can lose the entire value of your position.
Futures and leveraged products amplify both gains and losses and are not suitable for most people.
Tokenised equity products give price exposure without conferring ownership, voting rights, dividends or investor-protection scheme coverage, and they should not be treated as a substitute for holding shares.
Yield and staking products carry principal risk regardless of the advertised rate.
Zero-fee market coverage is set by MEXC and shown on the official fee page, and markets can move on or off that list without notice.
MEXC does not hold MiCA authorisation, does not serve EEA residents following the transition deadline of 1 July 2026, and appears on ESMA's register of non-compliant entities.
MEXC does not serve residents of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong, mainland China, Malaysia or Kazakhstan, and the User Agreement is the authoritative list.
Every fee, rate and restriction here was taken from official sources on 4 September 2026 and all of them can change without notice.
This article is published by MEXC and is not independent financial advice.

Where to go from here

If the asset you trade is on the 0 Fees list, the comparison ends at one line: a quoted spread of 2.55% against nothing.
If the metals, the 27 currencies or the real equities are why you opened the account, Uphold keeps those and MEXC does not replace them.
