Key highlights:

  • SpaceX is acquiring AI coding startup Cursor in a $60 billion all-stock deal, one of the largest AI acquisitions ever.
  • Cursor generates an estimated $2.6 billion in annual revenue and serves more than 50,000 enterprise customers.
  • The acquisition gives SpaceX and Grok a major foothold in the booming AI coding market currently dominated by OpenAI and Anthropic.

SpaceX turns its IPO momentum into a massive AI acquisition

Just days after completing the largest IPO in Wall Street history, SpaceX has announced its first major acquisition.

The company is acquiring Anysphere, the developer behind AI coding platform Cursor, in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. The deal ranks among the largest acquisitions ever involving a venture-backed startup and highlights Elon Musk's determination to expand beyond aerospace and deeper into artificial intelligence.

The acquisition follows months of collaboration between the two companies. In April, SpaceX secured an option to acquire Cursor later this year as part of a broader partnership focused on AI development and access to computing resources.

Cursor gives SpaceX a powerful position in AI coding

The acquisition is ultimately about one thing: software developers.

Cursor has emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI startups in history, becoming a favorite tool among software engineers who use AI to generate, edit, and debug code. According to recent reports, the company now generates approximately $2.6 billion in annualized revenue, making it a significant player in the rapidly expanding AI coding sector.

The platform competes directly with products such as OpenAI's Codex, Anthropic's Claude Code, and Microsoft's GitHub Copilot.

According to company data cited across multiple reports, Cursor's tools are already used by tens of thousands of enterprise customers, including major technology companies and software teams worldwide.

For SpaceX, the acquisition instantly delivers something that Grok has struggled to achieve on its own: a widely adopted AI product with strong enterprise distribution.

The deal could reshape the AI competition

The acquisition is expected to strengthen SpaceXAI, formerly xAI, which has been working to catch up with OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google in the race to build advanced AI systems.

Most analysts suggest that Cursor's technology and user data could help improve Grok's coding capabilities while creating a new feedback loop between AI models and real-world software development workflows. The companies also plan to launch collaborative AI development products that combine Cursor's coding tools with Grok's underlying models. (

The move arrives as competition in AI coding intensifies.

Developer-focused AI products have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the AI industry because they provide a clear path to revenue generation. Companies are increasingly willing to pay for tools that improve developer productivity, making coding assistants one of the most commercially successful AI applications today.

Investors are rewarding the strategy

The market responded positively to the announcement.

SpaceX shares gained approximately 10% following news of the acquisition, adding more than $200 billion to the company's market value. The rally extends a remarkable run that began after the company's blockbuster IPO, which raised roughly $75 billion and attracted close to $250 billion in total investor demand.

The all-stock structure of the transaction also minimizes dilution concerns by allowing SpaceX to use its elevated valuation as acquisition currency.

For investors, the message is becoming increasingly clear: SpaceX is no longer just a space company.

Between Starlink, AI infrastructure, Grok, and now Cursor, Musk is building an ecosystem that spans aerospace, communications, and artificial intelligence. The $60 billion acquisition may ultimately be remembered as the moment SpaceX signaled that it intends to compete directly with the biggest names in AI.
