TLDR

  • XRPL core development is focused on 6 repository improvement areas.
  • The listed areas include telemetry, logging, and type safety.
  • Refactoring is underway to improve XRPL core code organization.
  • Documentation work is planned after the refactor is completed.
  • The changes are aimed at improving XRPL developer workflows.

XRP Ledger core development is currently focused on internal upgrades to the repository, according to comments from Denis Angell, who outlined six areas of ongoing work to improve the developer experience and the maintainability of the codebase. Rather than focusing on new end-user features, the current effort centers on the repository structure, tooling, monitoring, and documentation for the XRP Ledger core software.

Angell said XRPL core developers are rebuilding the repository’s fundamentals through a set of changes covering telemetry, nomenclature, type safety, refactoring, logging, and documentation. He described the work as demanding but necessary for improving how developers build, test, monitor, and maintain the network. The update points to a phase of engineering work focused on backend improvements that support long-term development rather than feature releases.

The first area is telemetry, which Angell said is being developed to support enterprise reporting, metrics, and real-time logging. He said that in past cases, troubleshooting required validators to manually share logs when issues appeared. With updated telemetry, developers may be able to create a command-center-style monitoring setup for the XRPL and observe validator activity across the Unique Node List with more direct visibility.

Repository Work Focuses on Consistency and Reliability

Angell also said nomenclature is being addressed to create more consistent naming across the codebase. In open-source development, variable and function naming can differ across contributors and over time. He said that aligning terminology should make the development cycle more efficient by reducing confusion and helping contributors work within a more uniform repository structure.

Type safety is another part of the work now underway. Angell said some parts of the repository are not currently type safe, and that adding stronger type checks will help developers identify bugs before the application compiles. He said this is also intended to help future-proof the repository as development continues. This type of work is often associated with greater code reliability and easier maintenance in larger software projects.

Refactoring is also part of the current XRPL core update. Angell said this part of the effort may draw mixed reactions, but described the early results as promising. He said the reorganization of the codebase is intended to improve structure and make the repository easier for core developers to manage. Better internal organization can also support later work in testing, review, and collaboration between contributors.

Logging and Documentation Remain Key Parts of the Plan

Logging is being updated alongside telemetry and refactoring. Angell said current logs vary widely from one file to another, making it harder to search, filter, and review technical data during debugging or network triage. A more consistent logging structure could allow telemetry data to be ingested into tools that support faster diagnosis of operational issues and clearer monitoring during incidents.

Documentation is listed as the final stage of the current effort, although Angell said that work has not yet started because refactoring is still in progress. Once complete, he said the documentation should give developers the tools they need to understand the code more easily. He also said improved documentation may help new developers contribute without needing direct guidance from senior engineers for basic repository navigation and understanding.

The update on XRPL core development comes as Ripple President Monica Long has also discussed broader uses for the XRP Ledger, including digital identity. She said XRPL’s decentralized structure could support models in which users control their own personal data rather than relying on large technology platforms. That view presents XRPL as infrastructure for portable digital identity across platforms.

At the same time, SBI Ripple Asia and the South Korea-based DSRV have launched joint research into the use of blockchain for remittances between Japan and South Korea. According to the announcement, the study will examine future payment and remittance applications that use the XRP Ledger as the underlying blockchain. Together, those efforts place the current repository work within a broader period of development and research tied to the XRPL ecosystem.
