MultiChoice now lets DSTV users split subscription costs

MultiChoice has launched a shared payment option that enables DStv subscribers to share the cost of their monthly subscription with another person. This move is part of the pay-TV provider’s efforts to introduce more affordable options for its customers in Africa.

The feature, now live on the MyDStv app, lets a primary account holder send a payment link to someone else, a friend, partner, or family member to contribute toward a single subscription. Each bill can only be split between two people.

To compete with growing streaming services, MultiChoice has lowered decoder prices in major markets like Nigeria and South Africa. They are also adding more basic channels to attract new customers and make pay-TV more affordable.

MultiChoice’s new payment option simplifies subscription management for households, particularly young people, students, and co-living situations where entertainment costs are often shared. This feature formalises the common practice of splitting expenses, so no one person is solely responsible for the monthly bill.

This update makes renewals easier for customers. Before, they had to manually transfer money. Now, the app does it automatically, so subscription payments are quicker and more reliable.

NBCUniversal to launch its Universal+ service via DSTv in South Africa by October

MultiChoice is lowering the initial cost to subscribe to or continue using DStv. In South Africa, the price of the HD decoder has decreased from approximately R899 (₦79,500) to about R499 (₦44,100). The price, including installation, has also been reduced to around R799 (₦70,700). Furthermore, Explora decoders have significantly decreased in price, with certain online models selling for as little as R999 (₦88,400).

Entry-level Access packages are also being strengthened, with channels like Trace Ngoma, Trace Gospel, and WWE added permanently at no extra cost.

A pressure move in a crowded streaming market

MultiChoice is experiencing increased competition from streaming platforms in Africa. In the last two years, they have lost close to 3 million traditional TV subscribers because viewers are switching to more affordable and adaptable online streaming options.

By lowering hardware costs, adding more content at the bottom tier, and allowing subscription splitting, MultiChoice appears to be repositioning pay-TV as a shared household utility rather than a premium solo expense.

The company is also leaning more heavily on its rewards ecosystem. Since launching DStv Coins in late 2025, customers have redeemed over 20 million coins to offset subscription payments, showing a growing appetite for flexible pricing tools.

For Nigerian users, the updates could make DStv and GOtv more competitive in a market where cost sensitivity is high, and streaming services continue to expand aggressively. As more people adopt shared payments, families may start to see TV subscriptions as shared digital expenses rather than individual responsibilities.
